In the school calendar that was released earlier this week, LCSS has designated Mondays as an early dismissal day for Teacher Professional Development. All schools will have a 2:30 p.m. dismissal to allow teachers to work on Professional Development (PD). PD will run from 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. This is a practice that is widely used in both public and private schools.
Weekly PD allows teachers to adequately meet and collaborate on items that are deemed essential for top performance and preparation. This early dismissal enables LCSS to provide our staff with a weekly opportunity to work together on school improvement, training, collaboration, spiritual formation, review of data, and reflection. Student learning and achievement increase when educators engage in effective professional development focused on the skills educators need in order to improve student outcomes.
The after-school time was chosen to ensure that the schools were able to provide after-school care or supervision for working parents. This Monday time was chosen based on teacher availability in conjunction with the teacher contracts. There are limited options to add this weekly collaboration time due to all the other extra days already required in their contracts.
Over this past week, we have received some questions and concerns about early dismissal. We, therefore, would like to take this opportunity to better understand how this decision will affect our parents and families. Once we receive this feedback, the Principals will meet as a group to review and determine the next steps to ensure we are able to make the best decision moving forward.
